Drawing, Illustration, Painting

Joanna has been drawing and painting for as long as she can remember, and was her go-to pastime as a child. She particularly enjoyed drawing horses and copying Disney characters, little realising back then that she would spend a significant part of her early career working directly with Disney as a textile designer.
Joanna's school reports consistently highlighted her bold use of colour, a characteristic that remains central to her work today. She thrives on working with a bright palette, taking inspiration from artists such as Matisse, Van Gogh, and Hockney. Her style remains distinctly illustrative, reflecting years spent creating imaginary figures and backgrounds, with acrylics as her medium of choice to complement her technique and visual imagery.
Preferring an interpretative, abstract approach over realism, she naturally gravitated toward repetitive patterns, a clear nod to her background in surface pattern design.
Joanna holds a particular fascination for painting inhabited landscapes, capturing the fleeting dynamic of a subject moving through a permanent space. This transient presence subtly alters the scene for the viewer, much like how Edward Hopper’s eerie urban landscapes derive their quiet power from the figures within them.
